Tips for growing Peonies in your home garden
Peonies are some of the most flexible perennials. They include a wide range of flower forms and attractive colors with beautiful foliage that endures long after the blooms have gone away. Peonies can make a nice touch along a shrub border, wall or fence. Peonies are hardy flowering plants that need little care and live through severe winters. After becoming established in a garden, Peonies bloom each spring for many years. Peonies are also extensively grown as ornamental plants for their very large, often scented. Since ancient times, Peonies have been regarded as the symbol of wealth, luck and happiness. Peonies always represent elegance and poise. There are two types of Peonies. 1. The garden or herbaceous type or Paeonia hybrids, have full bushy stems that grow two to four feet tall, - and Garden peonies grow from tubers. 2. Tree peony or Paeonia suffruticosa types often grow to eye-level height on woody stems with few branches. Tree Peonies are shrublike plants grown either from seed or from grafts. Peonies do well under full sun, but they are also able to deal with slight shades. Planting and growing peonies is not difficult as these plants are recognized mostly for their hardiness. Peonies can be used for so many things-it's no surprise that they are some of the most admired and coveted garden flowers. Peonies are very tough and versatile plants. For best results, plant peonies in a sunny or slightly shady area. They will develop best if receiving full sun, where they will generate the most number of blooms. When receiving more shade, they may generate a reduced amount of flowers, however, the flowers could endure a longer period of time once they do show up. Single flowered varieties appear to thrive better in shade compared to doubles. Peonies will thrive in most soils considering that they aren't too damp and are sufficiently drained. They grow well on chalk and actually do favor alkaline conditions. If your soil is acidic employ some lime at planting. A weightier soil is much better than a lighter one. If you have light soil include some loam or good organic compost. This will help enhance moisture retention. If your garden is located at high altitude or is open to strong wind, taller types will require staking. Whether you're growing peonies in pots from the nursery or dormant tubers, there is just one technique to getting the best results. Place the tuber, or the thick and plump root, so that the eyes on the crown are enclosed with 1 or 2 inches of soil. Realize that peonies are very choosy when it comes to how deep they are set in the soil. If your peonies stop blooming even in the following several years, go back to their site and find out if they have not gone too low into the bed or had unnecessary amounts of soil gathered on top of them. Growing peonies also involves staking them, particularly if they have the likelihood of toppling over during mid-summer. To stake well, start soon in the growing season. The Gardener's Peony
The Chinese have been growing tree peonies for 1600 years but these exotic plants still make a novel addition to the Western garden. A full-size plant bearing dozens of flowers is an awesome sight and the selection here includes the best of the Chinese and Japanese cultivar ranges, the classic hybrids and the sought-after hybrids raised by Arthur Saunders in the 1930s that range in colour from yellow to mahogany-red. Enthusiasts of herbaceous peonies will delight in the selection of Paeonia lactiflora cultivars along with the new complex hybrids between P. lactiflora, P. wittmanniana and P. macrophylla |
